Since Olivah was founded, we have explored Portuguese natural stone as a starting point for new creative possibilities that unite tradition, territory and design. With the Broot: Dialogues from Within, promoted and coordinated by Assimagra, we established a dialogue between Portuguese stone and other natural materials from the same soil, such as cork, clay, burel and schist. We invited design studios to immerse themselves in local knowledge and heritage, creating a collection of functional and decorative objects that tell the story of a territory.
Over more than 7,000 km across the country, we gathered stories, techniques and memories in dialogue with artisans, producers and communities. The marble and cork - the soul of the Alentejo, granite and burel from Serra da Estrela, the schist from Foz Côa and wood, clay and limestone from the center of the country, basalt and wicker from the Azores, revealed themselves as living fragments of Portuguese identity and its centuries of ancestral history.
From this research, we have created a collection of objects that honor Portuguese culture, in collaboration with five partner studios, through a collaborative and experimental process. Bringing these narratives to life with sustainability and respect for the materials, balancing ancestral techniques with contemporary design, was challenging and only possible thanks to the meticulous work of a collaborative network of artists, artisans, companies, and industries from different regions of the country.
Broot proposes a new look at the future of design, where culture, territory and sustainability are balanced and promote dialogues between the past and what is yet to come.
